Murray Somerwolff is an indie game dev who lives in the creative swamp of drawing, writing and designing.

First working as an eccentric illustrator, Murray joined the Games Industry in 2017 as part of Danish studio Triple Topping Games where as an artist he helped ship mobile-precision platformer “Spitkiss” and then as art director and co-writer, the award winning biopic adventure game “Welcome to Elk”.

After pitching and working pre-production on their third title, the existential punk management “Dead Pets Unleashed”, Murray came back to the UK freelancing, teaching HE Games Art and working as a UI artist for Cloth Cat Games.

In 2023 he was accepted onto the Astra Games Fellowship, where he took the indie dev moniker Somerwolff Games.

Alongside Rothio Tome, he is currently developing “Wax Heads” a record store puzzle narrative game.

Murray Somerwolff is speaking at the following session/s

It’s Not How It looks, It’s How It Feels

Art
4:15pm - 5:00pm
Space 2

Looking at the throughline from art directing Welcome to Elk and Dead Pets Unleashed to fast forward to developing Wax Heads, Murray unpacks his experience of fraught indie dev art making and how he learnt delivering on vibes and ideas was more than the perfect visual fidelity.

Session Takeaway

• Critically evaluate your game in conversation with the world around you, not just itself

• Thinking about the emotional expectation of how you want your game to be perceived is just as important as how the fidelity looks

• Having clear benchmarks to correctly assess your game and measure it with is key
